US Open champion Sam Stosur opened her new season with a defeat at the Singapore Women's Tennis Exhibition.
The Australian won the first set against Flavia Pennetta, but the Italian hit back to claim a 5-7 7-6 (7/3) 6-2 victory.
Pennetta will face Agnieszka Radwanska in Sunday's final of the six-woman tournament.
Radwanska was a convincing 6-3 6-1 winner over China's Peng Shuai.
Organisers hope a successful event will see the tournament gain full WTA status in the future.
